A tragic train derailment in the southern state of Oaxaca has caused the fatalities of at least 13 people, an incident expected to reignite opposition criticisms regarding the speed and execution of the country's key infrastructure initiatives.
The accident took place on the Interoceanic Corridor train, a route developed to join the Atlantic and Pacific across the slenderest section of the Isthmus of Tehuantepec. This endeavor was intended to offer an alternative rail cargo route to the Panama Canal, intended to promote regional growth in the area.
“We will thoroughly investigate the cause of this incident,” declared the country's president.
The leader confirmed that, of the some 250 people on board, another 98 were hurt, with five of those in grave condition. The official stated plans to visit Oaxaca to meet those involved.
The Interoceanic Train was a signature infrastructure project of the immediate past president, whose presidency finished the year before. This rail line was a hallmark of his government's strategic agenda for the southeastern region.
Another ambitious rail project from that period, a passenger and freight circuit around the Yucatán Peninsula, was also central to the comprehensive effort to kickstart the economy of a relatively less developed part of the country.
The construction of both railway systems was supervised by the nation's military, marking a notable expansion of its responsibilities in national works. They were completed at an fast-tracked rate, defying forecasts to be partially opened before the end of that government.
However, this rushed timetable had concurrently raised ongoing questions over operational security.
In the aftermath of the disaster, the leader of a primary political opposition urged an urgent halt in the development and management of all comparable projects.
This pause was requested while awaiting a thorough independent investigation. The party emphasized that the situation "requires swift accountability."
In response, the president maintained that the train had been functioning in complete compliance with all security protocols. Assurances were given that the government would remain "responsible" in both the construction and management of these vital projects.
